Washing machine hose buying guide: inlet vs outlet, sizes and safe replacement
Everything homeowners and appliance retailers need to know about washing machine inlet and outlet hoses — pressure ratings, fittings, when to replace, and how to avoid floods.
The two hoses behind your washing machine are the most common cause of laundry-room floods in Indian homes. Both are cheap to replace, but only if you know what to buy. This guide covers the difference between inlet and outlet hoses, what to check when you shop, and when it is time to swap the ones behind your machine.
Inlet vs outlet — different jobs, different construction
The inlet hose carries pressurised municipal water into the machine. It has brass 3/4 inch threaded fittings on both ends and a stainless-steel braid over a food-grade PVC core to handle pressure spikes. The outlet hose carries used water out to the drain. It is corrugated, wide-mouthed and flexible, with no pressure rating because it drains under gravity or a low-lift pump.
Check the burst rating on inlet hoses
A safe inlet hose is rated for at least 10 bar working pressure and 20 bar burst — the range that survives the pressure spike when a tap somewhere else in the building closes suddenly. MASCO inlet hoses are burst-tested at 20 bar as a factory standard.
Universal fit matters
Every major washing machine brand sold in India — Samsung, LG, IFB, Bosch, Whirlpool, Voltas Beko, Godrej and others — uses the same 3/4 inch inlet thread. Any inlet hose with universal brass 3/4 inch couplings will fit. For outlet hoses, the wide mouth end fits standard drain nozzles without an adaptor.
When to replace
Inspect both hoses every year. Replace an inlet hose immediately if you see any braid fraying, brass discolouration, or bulging in the rubber core near the fittings. Replace an outlet hose if it goes stiff, develops permanent kinks, or starts smelling of drain water — the second is a sign the corrugation has lost its odour seal.
Length rules
Buy a hose that reaches the tap or drain with a gentle curve, not stretched tight and not looped in a tangle. MASCO inlet and outlet hoses ship in 1, 1.5, 2, 3 and 5 metre lengths so you can match the run without extension joints.
