Garden hose care: get 5+ years out of your garden hose

A good garden hose should last five years or more, but most homeowners replace theirs every one or two years because of avoidable damage. Here is what makes the difference.

Drain and coil after every use

Water left standing inside the hose in Kerala's heat encourages the inner wall to soften. After watering, turn off the tap, run the last of the water out, and coil the hose loosely on a reel or hook. Tight coiling around a nail is what puts permanent kinks in a hose.

Keep it out of direct sun when possible

UV-stabilised hoses like the MASCO garden hose resist cracking in the sun, but a hose stored in shade will still outlast one baked on a hot tile roof. A cheap outdoor reel with a cover pays for itself in the first year.

Avoid dragging over sharp gravel

The outer coat is tough, but repeated dragging over sharp gravel eventually wears through the braid. Route the hose along paved paths where you can, and lift it over sharp corners.

Match the fitting to the tap

Standard Indian garden taps take 3/4 inch or 1/2 inch adaptors. Use a brass adaptor rather than a plastic one where the tap threads are worn — brass grips better and does not split under pressure.

When to replace
